Super Sentai and Power Rangers
So If I'm right, today, Saturday the 27th Where I am, is Sunday the 28th in Japan, where the final episode of Mashin Sentai Kiramager is Ending, March will the new series, Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger, the 45th-anniversary series. So I felt like writing a post about my love of Sentai, Power Rangers, and Other Tokusatsu shows
For anyone unaware, Tokusatsu is the Japanese word for the genre of Special effects, and they're also I think a sub genre of the Kaiju films. Super Sentai got its start in 1975 with Himitsu Sentai Gorenja. I have not seen this yet myself, I haven't seen a lot of the older sentai, but I'm working on that.
When I was in the 6th grade, there came a show like no other....except maybe Voltron back in the '80s but shut up. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which at the time it started airing, I had no idea about it using stock footage from a Japanese show, specifically Kyoru Sentai Zyuranger, the sixteenth super sentai. It wasn't until much later in my life that I learned such a thing. The first Sentai I watched from beginning to end was the 30th-anniversary series Gogo Sentai Boukenger. Which became Power Rangers Operation Overdrive...Not one of the best Power Rangers series out there. If you happen to like it, that's fine, we can have different opinions, I just feel it wasn't that strong. I have to say the worst season was Megaforce/Super Megaforce.
As I mentioned, I haven't seen a lot of the older sentai, but I thought I'd give my thoughts on the seasons I have, as well as on Power Rangers, which I have seen more of. Not a full review or anything, though I may do that at some point.
As I said, the first Series I watched beginning to end was Boukenger, an interesting series where the goal was to find...My precious. I mean, the precious. Powerful relics that in the wrong hands could be bad. The suits were good, and I liked most of the characters, I can't say the same for its Power Rangers spin-off.
Next was the Series Jyuken Sentai Gekiranger. A series focusing on martial arts with an animal theme as well. I like this one as it stuck to its theme. One of my favorite things was the cat mentor (yes, a cat) who would say in everything there is training. Even something as simple as cleaning the floor was training. Its power rangers spin-off, Jungle Fury, was actually pretty good. Some people complained about the morphers being changed to sunglasses, but I think that was an interesting change, also I love that the teachers for the Elephant, Bat, and Shark, got their own spirit rangers that showed up, I would have loved to see them do it for the gorilla, penguin, and gazel to.
Next Up Engine Sentai Go-Onger. This is one of my all-time favorite series for just how silly it is. I love silly. The suit designs are awesome and I love every bit of it. I can't exactly say the same for its Power Rangers spin-off RPM. I understand the idea. Disney had control of Power rangers since about Ninja storm, and they were getting ready to end it, so like with In Space, they decided they were going to do a darker series, about the end of the world....and then the guy watching the Sentai to adapt it was like "Did that car just talk?! Yes, they took a very silly series, and made it serious, which doesn't work well I think. But it's not the worst season out there, just not one of my personal favorites.
I think this is a good stopping place, for now, I'll revisit this subject another day. If you're curious about any of the sentai I've mentioned, you can get them fansubbed on the internet. I myself go to tvnihon.com. You'll need a bit torrent program for those. If you want to check out the power rangers, I think they're still on Netflix, then there are DVDs, or you can get them digitally through things like apple TV.
